By following the actions of a first responder awareness level worker’s response to a hazardous substance release, this training teaches learners about OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER): First Responder Awareness Level regulation; along with the key aspects of DOT’s Hazardous Materials regulation.

This course will measure mastery on each of the following performance objectives:

    • Recall key statistics regarding accidents and deaths.
  • Act with caution when confronting a hazardous emergency.
    • Identify basic rules restraining and guiding response actions.
  • Know the five function levels of emergency response training.
    • State the principle duty of a First Responder Awareness Level.
    • Recognize the training level required for spill clean-up.
  • Observe the scene and collect facts.
    • Describe the potential risks.
    • List actions to take before calling emergency response.
  • Collect information to identify the hazardous substance.
    • Recognize placard types and the information they present.
    • Identify characteristics of hazardous materials labels.
  • Understand how the ER Plan guides response actions.
    • Recall the purpose and contents of the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Examine the scene for possible harmful outcomes.
    • Explain the meaning of an NFPA diamond.
  • Execute a clear and efficient report to emergency response.
    • State the principle duty of the first responder.
