Benzene Awareness Training: Maritime Industry

This interactive training provides workers with an awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the hazards and preventive measures needed when transferring, transporting, or storing cargo containing Benzene. Content fulfills the requirements of the American Waterways Responsible Carrier Program (RCP) (RCP V-C- 1f-2) and the USCG 46 CFR 197.565 (b) Required Training.

Video within this program presents actual footage on board barges and vessels. To emphasize safety procedures when working with Benzene, topics include a base knowledge of health and physical characteristics, hazardous cargo, exposure levels, personal protection, and medical response.

This course focuses on maritime personnel working with or around products containing Benzene.

  • Be aware of the health and physical characteristics of benzene.
    • Select ways that benzene can enter your body.
    • List some acute symptoms of benzene.
    • List some chronic symptoms of benzene.
    • Agree that benzene is flammable.
  • Recognize benzene as hazardous cargo.
    • Discuss what 46 CFR 151 Subchapter O dictates.
  • Prevent exposure to benzene.
    • List steps to take to minimize exposure to benzene.
  • Recognize the exposure levels for benzene.
    • Define PEL.
    • Choose the STEL for benzene.
    • Identify a Regulated Area.
  • Use proper personal protective measures when working around benzene.
    • List the prerequisites for working in a Regulated Area.
    • Agree that respiratory protection must be worn when working around benzene.
    • List the proper respiratory protection to wear when working around benzene.
  • Properly react if a person comes into contact with benzene.
    • Agree that a medical exam should be taken annually.
