Overview

Electrical Hazards: Construction’s Fatal Four

The Electrical Safety Foundation International reminds us there were 166 electrical fatalities in 2019, which was a 3.75% increase over 2018 and the highest number of electrical fatalities since 2011. To reduce the high number of injuries and deaths that occur on construction sites, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, has identified the four most common causes of injuries and fatalities in construction, with electrocution hazards being one of them.

This Electrical Hazards: Construction’s Fatal Four course’s primary objectives are to inform about the regulatory requirements around the electrical hazards pertinent to construction environments, and to directly discuss those specific hazards and corresponding safe work practices. This course covers the three main types of electrocution hazards, including coming into contact with power lines, contact with energized sources, and the improper use of extension and flexible power cords. This course covers topics such as maintaining safe distances from power lines, the effects of electrical shock, how electrical burns can occur and be avoided, ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), safety precautions for working on electrical equipment and safe use of extension and flexible power cords.

Use this course among all levels of your organization to ensure consistency in understanding around mitigation of deadly situations and regulatory requirements.
