Drug and alcohol abuse affects approximately 10% of the adult population. This safety training promotes the implementation of a Drug-Free Workplace Program, which has 2 main goals: to send the message that drug and alcohol use in the workplace is not allowed, and to encourage employees with substance abuse problems to seek help.

This course shows how employees with a substance abuse problem have a negative impact on the workplace. The quality and productivity of their work decline, their risk of having or causing an accident increases, and their relationship with co-workers becomes strained. The course helps employees recognize the warning signs and symptoms of substance abuse.

When abusers are confronted, they often respond by telling pitiful stories about their situation in order to elicit sympathy. Viewers are warned against becoming an enabler, which the course describes as “someone who helps another person continue self-destructive behavior.” Employees who suspect that a co-worker is affected by drugs or alcohol should report the situation confidentially. This course demonstrates the appropriate actions to take when you suspect a co-worker is abusing drugs or alcohol.
