Overview

MRSA/Staph and Infection Prevention for Oil Industry

Complex machines, extreme conditions, and combustible hydrocarbons are some of the obvious hazards you face working in the oil and gas industry. As part of your job you learn how to deal with these obvious dangers, but what about the dangers you can’t see? Harmful bacteria can easily lead to deadly infections, so it is critical to understand how to recognize these bacteria and prevent their spread. Use this On Demand training video to learn how to spot these common bacteria you face on the job, as well as how to combat any possible outbreak.

One of the more basic, and common, bacteria seen on the job is Staphylococcus. Also known as Staph, individuals stricken with an infection may experience rash, bone inflammation, heart valve infection, as well as pneumonia. While antibiotics help in most instances, some strains of Staph are resistant to these medicines. Perhaps the most deadly of the resistant strains is MRSA, or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.

Even though bacteria such as Staph and rarer superbugs such as MRSA can be extremely dangerous, they can be avoided with some ease. Washing your hands, properly cleaning and treating wounds, and maintaining a safe and clean work space are all ways to combat the rise of these potentially deadly bacteria. The preventive methods keeping these germs under control work for other bacteria as well; understanding the proper methods for treatment and prevention helps you avoid sickness from other sources. Use this online training video to teach your workers how to use personal hygiene and good housekeeping to prevent infections and outbreaks.
