This course familiarizes maritime workers with the requirements of the Globally Harmonized System of hazard communication. Viewers learn how to read GHS safety data sheets and chemical warnings. Physical hazards, health hazards and environmental hazards are discussed. Viewers learn about the different ways chemicals can enter the body and pose health hazards, and those pathways are tied to the explanation of nine pictograms on warning labels. All elements of the chemical labels are explained and employees are reminded to read chemical labels before opening or using the chemical. The video discusses how to identify the types of personal protective equipment required and spill responses required when working with chemicals in the maritime environment. Working in confined spaces, which can pose hazards when chemical vapors are present, is discussed. Proper ventilation and personal protective equipment is discussed for confined-space safety.
Each employee is responsible for understanding chemical hazards and taking proper precautions to protect themselves, their crew mates, the boat and the environment. This training video helps workers embrace that responsibility, and provides exercises after each section of information to ensure they understand the key points. All boat workers should be required to view this video training.
