Confined space entry is hazardous. Failure to follow regulations and safety procedures leads to accidents, and even death. In the past more than 300 workers died annually during confined space entry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that in more than 50% of confined space accidents, the rescuers became victims. This video covers essential safety basics for confined space entry.
Viewers learn you can't trust your sense of smell, since many hazards can't be detected by the human nose. This course reviews common atmospheric hazards. Oxygen deficiency occurs when oxygen levels are below the OSHA standard minimum of 19.5% oxygen, causing difficulty in breathing, thinking, unconsciousness, and death. At the other extreme, too much oxygen creates a fire hazard. If oxygen levels are at 23.5% or higher, a spark can cause a flash fire or an explosion. Other atmospheric hazards include flammable or explosive gases such as methane, which is odorless and colorless. Toxic gases and vapors are irritants and asphyxiants. Hydrogen sulfide is extremely toxic, and fatal at 0.01%. Asphyxiants such as carbon monoxide push out the air that's needed to breathe. This course explains why trained workers should use instruments to test the confined space for atmospheric hazards.
This video also teaches the importance of obtaining permits, using safety equipment, and other procedures for safe confined space entry. Watch this safety training video to learn how to prepare yourself and your co-workers for confined space entry.
