Overview

Hazardous wastes, also called solid wastes by the EPA, may be produced by a number of different processes, including those in governmental, industrial, or commercial facilities. The dangers these substances pose are real. They can easily, even in small doses, harm both employees and the environment. It is vital to know the specific rules and regulations the EPA has created in order to best manage, store, and dispose of solid wastes. With this training lesson, you will become educated on all of the specific rules and regulations, as well as how to properly identify, store, and dispose of solid wastes.

All containers storing solid wastes need to be labeled with "hazardous waste" due their dangerous properties. Among the four characteristics which make up hazardous wastes, include the toxicity and corrosive nature of the materials. The containers must be suited for the specific type of waste; often many containers can only be used for specific substances. Not only is it important to know how to manage the wastes produced, but it is also important to know how to instruct the next generation of workers on such procedures. After all, by law a generator's wastes will always belong to that generator.

It is true generators produce dangerous substances posing significant risks to both your employees and the environment. However, if the correct steps are taken, the potential for danger can be vastly reduced. While generating these wastes produces the potential for danger, it also produces opportunities for waste minimization. Waste minimization includes the ways employees reduce the amount of waste produced or reduce the amount of harm these wastes may cause.

Use this online training to become acquainted with the correct ways to manage solid wastes and how to minimize the hazards for both workers and the environment.
