Overview

When we hear the word asbestos, we more than likely think of the negative consequences of working with or around this substance. But what exactly is asbestos, and how does one avoid these harmful side effects? This lesson will give you the information to answer those questions and, more importantly, teach you how to reduce your chances of asbestos exposure.

To start, asbestos is a mineral with some beneficial qualities; it is lightweight, heat resistant, and sound absorbing. While asbestos was known in the past for these benefits, it is now more widely known for the dangers it poses to those who work with it. Because it was used widely in the construction and building processes, it is likely that anyone who currently works in those fields will encounter asbestos at some point. Due to this probability, and because humans cannot smell or taste asbestos fibers and therefore cannot know when they have inhaled or ingested them, OSHA has created training protocols geared specifically toward those who work with asbestos. Even if you work in these fields, you can reduce your chances of asbestos compromising your health by understanding the information presented in this Video On Demand course.

If your company expects you to work with asbestos, there will be a detailed asbestos management plan informing you of both the materials you may encounter as well as where you may encounter them. It is critical to be prepared if you have to put yourself in harm’s way by working with this substance; if you either have to remove asbestos or work next to it you need to understand how to protect yourself. This video training provides an understanding of the dangers of working with asbestos and teaches workers the safety precautions to protect themselves from asbestos exposure.
