Overview

People who work in commercial and light industrial facilities are at risk of coming in contact with bloodborne pathogens, which are disease causing organisms found in human blood. The most serious of these diseases are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. In the United States alone there are more than 70,000 new cases of Hepatitis B reported annually, and it is believed that more than three million people carry the Hepatitis C virus. This online training video explains how exposure to bloodborne pathogens occurs, and what you can do to protect yourself and your coworkers.

Viewers learn the most common way bloodborne pathogens are transmitted is through accidental injection by a sharp object, such as punctures from infected needles. This course shows steps you can take to reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens and stresses the importance of using standard precautions by treating all blood and body matter as if it is infectious. Engineering controls refers to the use of machinery or equipment, such as the use of tongs, to pick up contaminated materials. Work practice controls, such as hand washing, helps keep the environment safe, and wearing gloves, face masks, and other personal protective equipment reduces the risk of exposure. Housekeeping practices include decontaminating surfaces and keeping a cleaning schedule.

Learn how to protect yourself and your coworkers from exposure to bloodborne pathogens by watching this online training video.

This course has been updated to include GHS container labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for GHS compliance.
