Overview

Hearing loss can take place immediately such as with an explosion, or it can be prolonged when one is exposed to consistent levels of noise, not extreme, but over a long period of time. This Video On Demand points out being constantly exposed to 80 decibels of noise over a period of eight hours could lead to hearing loss, and how by wearing hearing protection you can avoid this risk. Exposure to more than 80 decibels causes damage more quickly.

There are several steps to take to prevent hearing loss such as replacing noisy equipment or restructuring the workplace. The biggest preventive step you can take is to use ear plugs and or ear muffs. This video discusses how ear muffs and ear plugs work differently, how they serve the same purpose under different circumstances. Illustrated in this video is the proper way to wear ear plugs and how using them correctly can stop hearing loss. Another important issue discussed is how to identify hearing loss symptoms such as ringing in the ears and muffled noises and sounds.

This online training video points out it is the worker's responsibility to ensure their hearing is protected by correctly wearing hearing protection and following all safety procedures.
